I love the internet. One reason that I love the internet is because eventually you can find pretty much everything. I submit for your approval, the unaired pilot for ‘The Big Bang Theory’.
Filmed in the spring of 2006, this pilot is very different from the show that is on the air today. For starters, there is no Penny, Howard or Raj. There is however, a Gilda and a Katie. The Gilda character was clearly morfed in to Leslie Winkle and Katie was obviously dramatically rewritten.
There are some funny bits in the pilot which didn’t make it in to the pilot that ended up airing but it is clear to me that this version of the show would not have been as successful.
Sheldon is very different from the character you see now. It isn’t very different than the Sheldon of the early season one episodes, but I think this pilot and those early episodes illustrate that sitcoms need time to grow.
I hope the appearance of this pilot – in three parts – means that it will end up an extra on a DVD at some point because it is a good example of the evolution of the show.
Still, you can judge for yourself.
