Random Catastrophe

Excuse the mess. I’m sorry there’s no logo but I really can’t draw. I’ll keep working on that one though. I’m sorry the sidebar is not in the best order that it could be. I’ll hopefully have that fixed by the end of the week. I’ve got all the widgets I think I need but what I can’t do is drag and drop them in to the right order. On a side note, if there are any visually impaired readers of this, how do you accomplish dragging and dropping with Jaws? I’ve never quite been able to figure that out, I know te right hot key but the rest is so fuzzy.

I’d love to be able to associate some graphics with some of my posts but I need some good ones. Having someone who can barely see out of one eye and doesn’t even have a right eye in the first place pick your graphics for you might not be the best thing in the world. Just some of those limitations I mentioned for those of you who saw Monday’s rant.

When I posted my tirade on Monday I certainly didn’t think I’d be back and writing as of Wednesday. However, I was highly motivated to write when we were supposed to launch and I still am. Besides, I’ve never been known to take a long vacation anyway. On a side note, anyone wishing to chip in some funds for a vacation, I want to visit California real soon, Bakersfield to be exact. I’d rather fly than take the bus, but flying costs more money!

I want to address the situation involving myself, the rest of the gang and what happened Monday a little bit more. However, I’ll do that in a separate entry. Right now, I just want to talk about the site a little bit.

The first thing you’ll notice is that there are no advertisements. There are a couple of reasons for this but the main one is that google ads just don’t generate a lot of money. I’d rather have someone buy me something off my WishList or make a donation [paypal-donations] because that way it gets to me sooner and I don’t have to hit a certain dollar amount before I see any money. I’m not doing this for the money, those days are gone but I’m still accepting donations because it is nice to feel appreciated.

The second thing you’ll want to take note of is the fact that in order to do much of anything on this site, you’ve got to be a registered user. Registration is free and doesn’t take you very long. Things like voting in polls and leaving comments are limited strictly to registered users. I’d like to foster a community here and the only way to do that is to do everything to encourage people to sign up.

If you want an avatar to go with you’re account, use the same email address you use to register here and get a free account at Gravatar.com and upload your avatar. It will then appear on any Gravatar enabled site – including this one – that you use the same email address on as you do your gravatar account. Cool, no? I personally have a Dr. Nick avatar because I love The Simpsons.

The next thing is something I really think is fun. Check out the social network features that are available. If you’re registered with the site you can: Add friends, view other user profiles, and use a twitter like activity stream to update what you’re doing and comment on the activities of others.

Now, when WordPress 3.0 is released around May of this year, then the game will change once more. I’ll wait on that until a more appropriate time but if you just search for WordPress 3.0 features you’ll probably get a clue. Oh what the heck, want another clue? Just have a gander at BuddyPress and I’ll simply say…Coming soon!

I’ve got lots of ideas for things I’ll be posting. I’ll return to recapping the anual NFL draft in the month of April. I did that for years at Home Theater Forum and again at the old DarkSideOfTheHooligans.com site.

I’ll be adding and tweaking things to the best of my abilities over the next few days and weeks. I’ll let you know as things are done.
